iPhone Duo with a Dutch mobile contract

Carriers split the €2,339 into 24 monthly instalments (toestelkrediet) on top of a plan. Cheaper per month, but legally a loan: you need a BSN, a Dutch IBAN and to pass the BKR credit check.

Which storage tier to buy

Storage is the only thing that changes between the four models. There is no upgrade later, so decide once.

256GB

€2,339

The sensible default. iCloud Photos with "Optimise storage" keeps the library small; 256 GB comfortably holds apps, offline maps and a few films for flights.

512GB

€2,589

Worth the €250 extra if you shoot 4K video weekly, keep the phone four years or more, or want a large offline music and podcast library. Best value per gigabyte of the four.

1TB

€3,089

For ProRes video and people who refuse to use cloud storage. On a foldable that doubles as a small tablet this is more useful than on a regular iPhone, but most buyers never fill it.

2TB

€3,839

Apple's halo tier. Only makes sense if you record ProRes 4K at 120 fps for a living. Two terabytes of iCloud+ costs less over the life of the phone.

How to buy the iPhone Duo as an expat

Buying outright is easy from day one in the Netherlands. Contracts take a little more paperwork. Here is what each route requires.

1. Delivery address

Every Dutch shop ships only to Dutch (and sometimes Belgian) addresses. A hotel, a friend's flat or a PostNL parcel point all work for Coolblue, bol and Amazon.nl. Apple delivers to Dutch addresses or lets you pick up in the Apple Stores in Amsterdam, Haarlem and Den Haag with a passport and the card you paid with.

2. Payment

Foreign credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex at Apple) work everywhere. iDEAL requires a Dutch bank account; PayPal is accepted by Apple, Coolblue and Belsimpel. bol's pay-later option (Riverty) needs a Dutch IBAN and address history, so count on paying the full €2,339 up front in your first months here.

3. Contracts: BSN, IBAN, BKR

A plan with device credit is a consumer loan under Dutch law. KPN, Odido, Vodafone and the resellers ask for a BSN, a Dutch IBAN, a valid ID and proof of address. They run a BKR (Bureau Krediet Registratie) check; with no Dutch credit history you may be refused or asked for a deposit. The workaround: buy the phone outright and take a SIM-only plan (no credit check, monthly cancellable).

4. eSIM with a foreign provider

The iPhone Duo has no SIM tray anywhere in the world. Your existing number moves over via eSIM if your home provider supports it: most UK, Irish, German, Belgian, French, Nordic and US carriers do, usually through their app or a QR code. Providers that still insist on plastic SIMs (some MVNOs, some prepaid brands) cannot be used. Dual eSIM works, so you can keep a foreign number alongside a Dutch one.

5. VAT

Dutch prices include 21% VAT. EU residents cannot reclaim it. Non-EU residents can use tax-free shopping at Apple Stores and MediaMarkt; the refund is roughly 12 to 14% after fees, and you must show the phone at customs when leaving the EU within three months. Bringing the phone to your home country may trigger import duty there.

6. Warranty across the EU

Apple's 1-year limited warranty is worldwide. EU law adds a 2-year legal conformity guarantee against the seller. Any Apple Store or authorised service provider in the EU handles repairs; AppleCare+ bought in the Netherlands is valid EU-wide too. The one practical catch: the 2-year legal claim is against the shop, so buying from a Dutch shop is simpler than from apple.com/de or Amazon.de if you live in the Netherlands.

Do I need a BSN to buy the iPhone Duo in the Netherlands?
Will Dutch shops be cheaper than Apple at launch?
Is the warranty valid if I move to another EU country?
Can I get the VAT back when I leave the EU?
Which storage size should I choose?
